Merle A. Hopkins

Merle A. Hopkins, age 71, of Boone, passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2012 at his home in Boone.

Following cremation, a gathering of family and friends will be held at 11:00 A.M. until 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 25, at his residence, 522 Washington Street in Boone.

Merle was born on January 9, 1941 in Boone, Iowa, the son of James Russell and Margaret (Hutchinson) Hopkins. He attended school in Boone.

Merle worked as a foreman for Central States Roofing in Ames, Iowa for 32 years.

Merle enjoyed racing cars, he started racing at the Dayton Speedway then later at the Boone Speedway. Merle's race care number was 13-1. He was a hands on person in wanting to get things done. Merle loved cruising the countryside and living the quiet life. Merle valued time spent with his daughter, grandsons and great grandchildren. He also loved watching his grandson's race every Saturday at the Boone Speedway. Merle also cherished his pet dogs.

Merle is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Russell Junior Hopkins.

Merle is survived by his daughter, Michelle Hopkins of Boone; his two grandchildren, Justin A. Hopkins (Nicole) of Boone and Jesse O. Hopkins (Heather) of Boone; his two great grandchildren, Keirra McFadden and Bailee Hopkins of Boone; his sister Rose Hopkins of Colorado and his brother Larry Hopkins of Boone and numerous other relatives and friends.

Memorials may be directed to the family to be used at their discretion.
